Charged With A Crime? It Doesn’t Mean You’re Guilty.

How to Choose a Denver Criminal Defense Lawyer

Denver Criminal Defense Attorney | Knowledge is Key

Lawyers go to law school and learn only an overview of our country’s legal system. We learn an overview of subject areas (wills, contract, real estate, criminal and bankruptcy, for example), but not depth in any one area. It is helpful to find someone who practices in your one area of law, because they have specialized. With experience comes expertise.

Jefferson County Defense Lawyers | Professionalism

As with any other field, a lawyer’s professional appearance and demeanor will reward you with intangibles. Last week, I saw a lawyer in court wearing sandals. He was a knowledgeable lawyer, too. Yet, he gave the impression he was unsuccessful and that he lacked respect for the court. The judge and other lawyers saw him as a “free spirit”, and a slacker.

Your Criminal Defense Attorney Should Be a Good Communicator

We lawyers are given difficult facts, subject matter, and law to sell to judges and juries. You need someone who can lay information out concisely, get to the point, and illustrate your facts and law favorably. You need someone who can present your version of a conflict in an attractive and believable package.

You Need A Defense Lawyer Who is an Advocate for You

You will need someone who believes in your cause and can get behind you. Former Deputy District Attorneys have a hard time with this after years of conditioning that everyone is guilty. DAs admire the police. You don’t want someone who gives up easily or who follows the course of least resistance. Don’t confuse this with a lawyer who refuses to give you the bad news (below).

You Need to Be Presented with the Bad News

Every case has bad news. Some lawyers wait until after you hire them to give the bad news (seen as positive) and some tell you the cold hard facts up front (seen as negative). How a lawyer sees ALL of your case is important. If your lawyer only presents the positives, you are being “sold” a false sense of security. You will be disappointed down the road – it is just a question of when and how much.

Criminal Defense Attorney Who Has the Time for You

Many good lawyers are simply too busy for more cases. They may be great in all the other categories I’ve listed, but too busy.

Affordable, but not Too Affordable

Price should not be THE barometer of how good your lawyer is. Some lawyers operate out of their basements, and have the cheapest rates. Others are expensive to pay for fancy offices. Find the balance on cost and realize price is not an accurate barometer to use in determining what you will get for your money.
