Charged With A Crime? It Doesn’t Mean You’re Guilty.

How Important is an Experienced Criminal Defense Attorney?

On Behalf of | May 20, 2011 | DAs, Courts, and Police |

So just how important is an experienced Colorado Criminal Defense Attorney?  If you are charged with a crime in the Eighteenth Judicial District of Colorado, it is apparently very important.  The Eighteenth Judicial District includes, Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln counties in Colorado.

I was just reading a Denverpost.com article that poignantly called out the reason why deputy district attorney’s pursue some cases that have seemed obvious, from my perspective, they should not.  In the report, Carol Chambers, the elected District Attorney for that district, explains how she motivates deputy district attorney’s to win convictions.  As some of us already knew, it’s all about money and promotions, although quite honestly I never thought an elected District Attorney would ever admit it publicly.

As other District Attorneys in Colorado caught wind of the political fallout of Ms. Chambers’ announcement of “cash for convictions”, they quickly distanced themselves from her, as noted in the referenced Post report.  And while it may not appear so blatant in other Colorado districts, you can be certain that Denver County, Jefferson County, Weld County, in fact every county in Colorado, uses similar methods.  Deputy District Attorneys do not become Chief Deputies by losing trials.

Many of our clients never imagined themselves in a position where they would be charged with a crime.  However, if at some time in your own life, you are faced with this unpleasant circumstance, you should know what you are up against.  After a deputy district attorney is assigned to your case, they will be motivated politically, monetarily, and career-wise to convict you.  Every “notch in their belt” (conviction) will get them closer to achieving their career goals.  There are no incentives for discovering the truth of your innocence leading to dropped charges or an acquittal.  The deputy district attorney assigned to a case against you may pursue you with great zeal, even if they have doubts about your guilt, if they think the case is winnable.  And by the way, if you prevail in a trial, nobody will apologize to you for all the anguish they caused.  They have little at stake, where you have everything.

That is why you need an experienced Colorado attorney with passion, zeal and tenacity, who will surpass the personal advancement motivation of the District Attorney’s office that is trying to convict you. That is why, if you are charged with a criminal offense in Colorado, you need to call our firm.  We are dedicated to the #1 goal of winning your case.
