(c) Without legal authority carries, brings or has possession of a firearm or any other dangerous device where a legislative proceeding is, or is going to take place, or where an official of the general assembly is located.
An individual may face a class 2 misdemeanor and a possible jail sentence to the Arapahoe County jail or the Douglas County jail. However, if the individual is a previous offender in possession of a weapon, his or her penalty can be quite harsh, amounting to a felony and a prison sentence.
C.R.S. 18-12-105, Section 2, Affirmative Defenses To Concealed Weapons Charges
Fortunately, there are exceptions to the serious consequences of unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon – also known as unlawful possession of guns and weapons. By virtue of some Colorado affirmative defenses, possession of a concealed weapon is legal, if the defendant was:
(a) A person in his or her own dwelling or place of business or on property under his or her control at the time of the act of carrying
(b) A person in a private automobile or other private means of conveyance who carries a weapon for lawful protection of such person or another person or property while traveling
(c) A person who, at the time of carrying a concealed weapon, held a valid written permit to carry a concealed weapon
