Prostitution and Soliciting for Prostitution, C.R.S. 18-7-201 and 202 in Denver County

Prostition-Soliciting-Prost.jpgDenver Police Prostitution Tactics - A 180 Degree Turn

Prostitution and Soliciting for Prostitution, C.R.S. 18-7-201 and 202, has been a problem for Denver police officers for years. So, when Denver police are given the task of eradicating a crime that will never go away, they have resorted to different approaches which haven't worked very well (Here is an article written in the Denver Post which discusses the changing tactics used by Denver police). Over the years they have gone from trying to get prostitutes off the streets to targeting their solicitors. This is a shift from trying to eliminate the supply to trying to eliminate the demand. In light of public human trafficking awareness, prostitutes are now seen more as victims than criminals and their Johns are seen as the ones who are taking advantage of the poor.

Prostitution vs. Human Trafficking in Jefferson County

Law makers, law enforcers, and District Attorneys are savvy politicians. They know how to ride the band wagon of public opinion in order to gain traction for issues that trouble us all. Human Trafficking is a phrase which stirs up images of oppressed people being held in makeshift prisons and used as sex slaves. This sort of outrageous criminal activity rightfully stirs up anger in decent people. But I am also outraged when police lure good people into breaking the law under the guise of anti-human trafficking task forces. These operations do not address the thing we are mostly concerned about. Sting operations designed to entice men into paying for sex are often publicized as heroic efforts by our politically motivated people. In fact, it is an easy cover-up for their lack of progress in Human Trafficking.

Prostitution and Public Shaming in El Paso County - A Government Tactic for Punishment

In an effort to discourage Solicitation for Prostitution, some local governments, such as Colorado Springs, have resorted to publishing photos of solicitors on television and on police department Facebook pages. This shames people, without regard to the secondary victims it creates. When law enforcement takes on the role of punisher, we all get a little closer to living in police state which creates fear rather than respect for those in authority. As a criminal defense attorney, I am committed to fighting for the rights of individuals by standing against those who abuse their authority the way this police department does.
