Common Police Tactics - Be Aware

Police and district attorneys in Jefferson, Adams, and Broomfield County employ many tactics to try and confuse you. Before I delve into common police tactics, remember to never speak with the police. If they are speaking with you, it is because you are a suspect and your words will be used against you in court!

The Pretext Phone Call

One strategy I have seen many times from the Sheriff's Department is a "pretext" phone call. The police have the person accusing you call from the police station and ask you questions about the alleged assault. The caller ID will show the caller's phone number, not the police. Your accuser will try and get you to admit to things the police will use to convict you. This phone call will always be recorded and will hurt your defense in court if you participate. Never speak with someone over the phone if they are asking about or accusing you of criminal conduct.

Your Side of the Story - Can and Will be Used Against You

Second, the police will offer for you to tell "your side of the story." If you have done nothing wrong, you may think that this is a great chance for you to explain the situation. Here's the problem; the police are only asking you questions to get you to confess or eliminate possible defenses. They are not seeking the truth. The officer speaking with you may pretend to be your friend and suggest you confide in him. Don't be fooled. They are no more trying to be your friend than a Venus Flytrap is trying to befriend a fly. Don't fall for their tricks. Instead, hire an attorney who solely practices criminal defense in El Paso, Gilpin, and Boulder County.

The moral of the story here is to make sure that you don't speak with anyone about anything relating to any criminal act you may or may not have partaken in. Even when speaking with someone to say "sorry" could cost you dearly.
