Colorado Gun Bills = Restrictions on Citizens - Chapter 2

The State of Colorado has recently adopted many new gun laws that will affect all citizens of Colorado in counties like Arapahoe, Jefferson, Douglas, Adams, and Denver county. This intrusive expansion state government will do more harm than good for the honest people of our great state.

What about the Universal Background Check law specifically? Initially, this law sounds like it will be something that most people would support. Citizens support the broad notion that Felons should not be able to purchase firearms in any state. This is why Denver, Larimer, and Weld County have the law of Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender under C.R.S. 18-12-108. Statutes like this can prevent someone who is not allowed to possess a gun from obtaining one legally in this state.

Yet, Colorado is saying to law abiding citizens that they cannot be trusted to sell their guns. What happens when the state continues to tell its citizens they can't be trusted? More people need criminal defense attorneys in the Denver metro area because more law abiding people are going to be charged with crimes. This new legislation will only serve to disarm and limit the access of people who are law abiding citizens. Sheriff's from counties like El Paso, Denver, and Douglas have stood against the gun bills because it makes their job harder to protect honest people. I am not usually on the side of the Sheriff's offices, but I think their position is appropriate.

The law proscribes firearms sales without government involvement. Even individual transfers to friends and neighbors will have to be background checked through a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer. Many dealers in Colorado have already stated they cannot do this task and make money for it. In other words, they are not required to run the checks for private sales, it is not cost effective for them to run the checks, and therefore, they will not run the checks. So, next time you want to sell your friend a gun, you won't be able to get a background check on them.

The state senate is advocating against your ability to protect yourself from Assault (C.R.S. 18-3-202) and Burglary (C.R.S.18-4-201) in Denver, Park, and Boulder County. Laws always have unintended consequences, which legislators ignore. As attorneys, we are fighting for your rights to protect yourself and others. We constantly fight to ensure you are protected against the government. So, if you or a loved one have been charged with Assault or any other crime, be smart, exercise your right to remain silent, and contact us at 303-731-0719. Together, we can protect your future.
