Brighton Mother/Daughter Charged in Scam: Forgery, C.R.S. 18-5-102

Denver Theft Attorney

A Brighton Mother/Daughter pair has been indicted by a Colorado Grand Jury for Forgery (C.R.S. 18-5-102) and Theft (C.R.S. 18-4-401), along with Racketeering and Money Laundering, after being accused of stealing over $1 million from women in partnership with a Nigerian internet romance scam. They allegedly posed as male soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, and started online romances through dating sites. At some point during the online romance, these fake soldiers would ask women for money so that they could visit her. Once the women sent the "soldier" money, the mother and daughter would take a 10 percent cut and send the remainder to the ring leaders in Nigeria.

Felony Theft and Forgery in Adams County

Each of the charges these women are facing is a felony, and therefore they are both facing around 200 years in prison if they are convicted on all counts. They will be prosecuted in Adams County District Court.

Arapahoe County Forgery Lawyer

In Adams, Arapahoe, and Denver County, Colorado, Forgery (C.R.S. 18-5-102) requires proof that a person falsely makes or alters a written instrument which is purported to be something of value, and it is a class 5 felony. Likewise, Theft (C.R.S. 18-4-401) of property valued over $20,000 is a class 3 felony, and prosecutors must prove that a person knowingly obtained control over the property of another with the intent to permanently deprive. Because the women in this case allegedly collected money from 374 women in more than 40 countries, they are facing multiple counts of each charge. Supposedly, they continued to participate in scam even after they were given a warning by Brighton police.
