Colorado Supreme Court Upholds Concealed Carry Law

Denver Concealed Carry Attorney

The Colorado Supreme Court Upheld the Concealed Carry Law (C.R.S. 18-12-201) at CU Boulder recently. The CU Board of Regents had issued a mandate that students could not carry concealed weapons at the University of Colorado, even with a lawful concealed carry permit. Students challenged this attempt to override the Colorado legislature and were victorious. The ruling affects concealed carry laws in Denver, Jefferson, Douglas, Arapahoe, Adams, Larimer and Weld County. Larimer County houses Colorado State University and Weld County houses the University of Northern Colorado.

Concealed Carry in Jefferson County - What Does It Mean?

The Concealed Weapons Act, C.R.S. 18-12-201 (formerly C.R.S. 18-12-105.1), was designed to allow persons to carry a concealed weapon contrary to C.R.S. 18-12-105, Unlawfully Carrying a Concealed Weapon. This Concealed Weapons Act is one of a few things the Colorado legislature has done a good job on. It allows persons who have a permit from their county sheriff to possess and conceal a firearm on their person.

Douglas County CCW - County Sheriffs

Under C.R.S. 18-12-203, County Sheriffs are required to issue concealed carry permits to legal residents who don't have felonies, chronic substance abuse issues, protection orders against them, are over 21 years old and have demonstrated competence with a firearm. Applicants need to pass a background check. This law allows law abiding people to arm themselves for protection by the threat of deadly force or deadly force, if necessary.

Colorado Second Amendment Rights Lawyer

This ruling restores hope for the firearm rights of Colorado citizens. Without this ruling, liberal political entities such as the Board of Regents, would chip away at state laws upholding the rights of citizens to possess firearms. Liberal institutions could thwart the will of the people of the State of Colorado through their elected officials.

Our law firm supports the firearm rights of Colorado citizens. If you've been charged with a crime involving firearms, be smart, exercise your right to remain silent, and call us today at 303-731-0719. Together, we can protect your future.
