Adams County Judges Add Useful Public Service to Every DUI / DWAI Sentence

Anyone convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI), or Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI), C.R.S. 42-4-1301, in Adams County or in any County within Colorado may, as part of his or her sentence, be ordered to complete Useful Public Service (UPS). Useful public service is also referred to as Community Service and it involves taking your personal time to work for an approved not for profit organization free of charge. UPS is ordered by the court and is not optional. Also UPS costs money to do! Yes, the public service work requires a fee to supervise you and to pay for insurance in case you are injured or injure someone while working for free to pay your debt for a DUI / DWAI conviction.

Arapahoe County Judges on Sentencing DUI and DWAI Cases

Judges are like most people, they are concerned about keeping their jobs. The masses tend to be unforgiving when it comes to punishing DUI / DWAI drunk drivers, so law makers and judges aim to please their constituents and keep their jobs. Can you imagine how many times a Colorado legislator would be reelected if she went on the record saying we needed to ease up on drunk drivers? The accident and injury statistics promoted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are overwhelming, so it does not matter if you believe the statistics since judges all across Colorado are on board with being more tough on DUI and DWAI convictions. In fact, most new laws on drinking and driving are passed so that no one appears “soft” on this subject.

Douglas County DUI / DWAI – Expect Useful Public Service – an Extra Way to Give Back to the Community

In addition to jail time, fines, mandatory education classes and loss of driving privileges, people convicted of any Drunk Driving laws in Castle Rock, Douglas County, should expect to do some community service. Judges feel this is another way for people to pay back society for the costs which a DUI / DWAI has had on communities and individuals. Useful Public Service may include work at governmental agencies, non-profits or charitable organizations. Probation departments are given the responsible to monitor compliance or noncompliance of those that have been ordered to complete Community Service. Most Probation Departments within each Colorado Judicial District maintain a list of approved Useful Public Service jobs available for those convicted of DUI or DWAI and other offenses.

Useful Public Service in Jefferson County – Should You Be Concerned About Getting it Done?

At O’Malley Law Office we often see good results for our clients, but sometimes little things can create big problems. I encourage clients to complete their Jefferson County Useful Public Service as soon as possible because the deadline can sneak up on them. I recall many times in the past, when clients have put their great outcome in jeopardy because they did not take care of their court ordered UPS. Useful Public Service should be the least of your worries, but if it is not completed on time, judges take it personally. Not completing UPS can extend your probation, change the outcome of a Deferred Judgement or even result in a Contempt of Court citation.
