Choosing the Best Denver Criminal Defense Lawyer

When I am talking to prospective clients who have been charged with a crime or have a probation violation in Denver, Jefferson or Arapahoe County, they often question me as to whether I am a good lawyer. They ask about my success rate and how many cases I have handled. Since this is a difficult question to answer, let me offer readers some suggestions on how to locate the best criminal defense attorney for their case.

First, shop around. Don't go with the first person you call. You need a basis for comparison. By meeting three different lawyers face to face (at their office), you will learn whether one is stating extremes or exaggerating. You will learn whether the quoted fee is in the ball park. You will picture whether you want this person vs. others representing you in front of a judge or jury.

Be realistic. If an attorney tells you they can get you off your charges, and they have not seen any evidence, read any police reports or interviewed any witnesses, they are lying to you. Some people are so desperate for hope that they believe the first person who tells them they can get them off. You should ask probing questions as to how the lawyer will get you off when you meet in person. Dig into the attorney's legal knowledge. Make the most of your meeting and then scrutinize it afterward. Think about it - don't make a quick hiring decision.

Take an objective person with you. I suggest brining a trusted advisor such as a parent or mentor with you to meet the person you are interviewing. After the meeting, consider the advice of this person. They are not so emotionally involved as you.

Avoid the lowest fee strategy. If you were looking for a surgeon, would price be your priority? Many lawyers charge low rates out of desperation for business. Do you want the most desperate attorney who can't find work representing you? Also, cheaper lawyers often practice in several areas and don't know one area well.

Find someone who knows criminal defense well. Attorneys in Douglas, Adams and Larimer County who practice in more than one specialty will know less than those who focus in one area. You don't want a representative who works criminal cases part time, divorce part time and personal injury part time. While they may be adequate at each, you need expertise, not "adequate".

Our attorneys welcome the chance to meet you in person and earn your confidence. If contacted by police, remain silent and give us a call at 303-731-0719. Together, we can protect your future.
