Department of Motor Vehicles & a Drivers License in Colorado

The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has been given the responsibility to ensure that drivers in Arapahoe, Douglas and Weld County, Colorado are safe to be on the road. Believe it or not, there are some people who can't figure out how to drive safely - and they need to be kept off the road.

Drivers in Colorado are licensed after testing for safe operation of a motor vehicle. They must also provide proof of insurance for their vehicles. In the event of a traffic citation / ticket, they are given points. Adult drivers over 21 years old can accumulate up to 11 points before their driving privilege in Colorado is suspended. When they hit their 12th point, their license and driving privilege (if they are not from Colorado) will be suspended. Points will drop off after a year and again after twenty-four months (you can only get up to 18 points in a twenty four month period).

Revocation is a period of time in which the driver must go without out driving, or be subject to a strict list of driving limitations under a probationary (red) license. During this time, a Denver, Adams or Larimer County driver will generally be limited to driving to and from work, school, and medical appointments. Any citation during this probationary time will certainly result in the loss of the probationary license. If people drive without the probationary license, they likely will be facing a jail sentence. Since many suspensions / revocations of driving privileges are the result of serious traffic crimes like Careless Driving, C.R.S. 42-4-1402, Reckless Driving, C.R.S. 42-4-1401, or DUI / DWAI, C.R.S. 42-4-1301, the Department of Motor Vehicles wants to get drivers off the road quickly if they are endangering other drivers' lives.

The point system is designed to give a little leeway to drivers who have just had an unlucky spell at driving. You are not going to lose your license right away for a small speeding or stop sign violation in Grand, Eagle or Jefferson County. However, if you are risky to others or run from your responsibility in an accident, you will find that the DMV comes down on you quick and hard. It is never good to run from an accident and if you are caught you will surely lose your license. With the necessity of a license for the performance of a job, you just can't fool around with the DMV.

If you are facing the revocation of your license or the loss of your driving privilege in Colorado, be smart, exercise your right to remain silent, and call the experienced DMV attorneys at the O'Malley Law Office at 303-731-0719. Together, we can protect your driving future.
