Hit and Run Driver Pleads Guilty to Leaving the Scene of an Accident

A young man accused of Hit and Run left the scene of a Denver, Colorado, accident last fall pleaded guilty to the charges on Monday, February 7th.  Brandon Mondragon, 21, fled the scene of an accident that occurred after injuring two people in a crosswak in Lower Downtown Denver, Colorado, on October 3, 2010.

According to passengers in Mondragon's vehicle, they were coming from a local club where they had been until late that evening.  That is when Mondragon hit Tim Albo, 26, and Heather Kornman, 27, in a crosswalk at chestnut and 20th streets.  Then he drove away.  Mondragon was arrested a week later.

Mr. Mondragon's Denver County District Court plea deal involves six months of work release, as well as 300 hours of community service, and four years of probation.  CBS 4 news reported that Tim Albo's family was not pleased about the length of his sentence.  Albo is reported to have suffered brain damage.

When traffic accidents occur in Colorado, although there can be understandable panic and fear that overcomes the driver, there are serious consequences to fleeing the scene.  Common charges such as Colorado Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Failure to Give Notice, Information and Aid, will result in twelve point penalties a piece against the driver's privilege to operate a motorvehicle in Colorado.  In good conscience and under the law, there is a duty to come to the aid of the injured and to seek help.  Mondragon received a reduced sentence due to his plea, but now he has a record to live with, as well as the guilt of having harmed another.
